23 Jan 12 Three Phones That Show Just Why A Big Screen Is Important

To anyone who doubts the importance of big screens on phones (especially touchscreen phones), there are three mobile phones that show off better than any other why they are so vital. Let's take a look at the biggest and best screens in the mobile phone market...

HTC Touch HD - currently dominating the big screen market

On the subject of big screens, one has to mention the HTC Touch HD, as for a few months, it's held the record for the biggest screen on a commercially released mobile phone. At 3.8 inches, it is truly vast, and the high, 800x480 resolution makes it genuinely easy to use things like scrollbars in menus. However, the HTC Touch HD actually does a very good job of making it so you don't have to go into standard Windows menus that often, as on top of the operating system, the interface is HTC's patented TouchFLO 3D setup, where everything is achieved through various finger swipes and sweeping gestures. It is truly intuitive, and it's the reason why the HTC Touch HD is such an unmitigated joy to use. Of course, it's not all about being pretty, a phone needs to have decent features and the HTC Touch HD has them in spades, from the 5 megapixel camera, through GPS, to incredibly fast HSDPA internet access (not to mention the superb Opera Mobile web browser). To many, the HTC Touch HD is the ultimate Windows Mobile phone.

Toshiba TG01 - taking Windows Mobile to new levels

Announced before MWC, the Toshiba TG01 is nonetheless making a starring appearance at the show. With the incredible specs of the phone it's easy to see why, as well. Not only does it have the biggest screen of any mobile phones on the market, but the Toshiba TG01 also has the fastest processor, too, coming in at over 1GHz. That puts it firmly in 'laptop-power' territory, but with the standard WinMo interface, it would still be a clunky experience.

Luckily, it doesn't rely on the standard WinMo interface, instead using a bespoke 3D interface, custom designed for the Toshiba TG01. Best described as a series of revolving panels, it has a Venetian blind feel to it, with left and right swipes of the finger revealing different shortcuts and apps, as the 3D strips revolve in an incredibly smooth and fluid way. It really is a joy to use, and that's the reason why, as well as being the most powerful Windows Mobile phone to date, it's one of the nicest to use!

Sony Ericsson Idou - more powerful than the average country...

With those two phones, you're looking at using Windows Mobile, even though on the HTC Touch HD, you'll be hard-pressed to find many instances where you actually need to go into the Windows menus. Both it and the Toshiba TG01 WILL be overtaken, though, because at the Mobile World Congress 2009, a new Sony Ericsson device was announced. And it's a monster! Called the Sony Ericsson Idou, it has the same Symbian software, but with a custom interface on top, that's more incredible than anything on Earth. Sleek animations move you between screens, and the music player, built with Walkman technology, is second to none. However, it has one, huge, not-so-secret weapon, because the Idou from Sony Ericsson is the first phone to feature a TWELVE megapixel camera. Because of that, and because of the superb interface, there's simply nothing out there that can touch (no pun intended) the Idou...
